SVP of Marketing & Sales
Jim is SVP of Marketing and Sales at Chorology, Inc., bringing over 20 years’ experience in strategic marketing and business development for AI, machine-trained digital products and services in the cybersecurity, compliance, medical and media industries. Skilled in leading entrepreneurial and intrapreneurial teams, Jim has a natural passion for incubating and marketing ground-breaking, data-centric innovations that rapidly establish market share and revenue growth.
Prior to Chorology, Jim led strategic expansion initiatives for Nok Nok Labs, co-inventors of the innovative cryptographic key-pair standard FIDO (Fast IDentity Online) the technology behind passwordless identity and authentication. The phishing-resistant FIDO standards have been adopted and marketed as “passkeys” by Apple, MSFT, Google, Amazon, eBay and PayPal, among hundreds of other Fortune 500 enterprises.)
In prior roles at Quixey App Search and Spherex Inc, Jim worked with AI and ML data scientists, to develop and launch B2B2C enterprise products that generated multi-million-dollar revenue streams. One notable accomplishment was at Yahoo Search Marketing/Overture, Inc., where Jim and his local search team authored YSM’s global geo-targeted search product strategy. This global strategy generated incremental local search revenue of $300M in year one, resulted in Yahoo’s $60M acquisition of WhereOnEarth, Inc of London, UK and the establishment of the Yahoo open-Geo services platform.
Thriving in the unknowns of green field opportunities, Jim enjoys leading teams to achieve successful wins and predictable growth by executing big ideas together. In the retail industry, for BrandsDirect and IdeaLab’s CarsDirect, Inc, the innovation projects Jim’s team planned achieved 95% adoption in multi-billion-dollar retailer segments. In partnership with corporate development, Jim’s teams created GTM strategies that closed tuck-in acquisitions of software and data assets with valuations from $5M to $60M and growth capital in the range of $5M to $50M – including as co-founder and CEO of his own VC-backed startup in the local SMB space.
Always curious about innovative technologies, James started his early career analyzing the performance of top-secret aircraft at Lockheed Advanced Development Co. (The Skunkworks). James has an MBA from the Anderson School of Management, and MS and BS degrees in Aeronautical and Aerospace Engineering from Purdue University. James has co-authored fifteen patents in data-driven local search relevancy with nine granted.
CHOROLOGY.ai today emerged from stealth to apply a domain-specific artificial intelligence (AI) model to data governance.
The company has developed a domain-specific language model capable of discovering all the types of data to make it simpler to achieve compliance, ensure data privacy and improve security posture enforcement.
Using an auto-data discovery engine coupled with an auto-data classification and an auto-data mapping engine the domain-specific language model eliminates the need to pre-process data to apply governance and compliance policies.
Company CEO/CTO Tarique Mustafa said those capabilities collectively enable organizations to significantly reduce the total cost of data governance.
At the same time, the domain-specific language model also enables cybersecurity and IT teams to leverage natural language queries in a way that reduces the overall level of expertise required to govern data, he added. That approach, in effect, will make it easier for organizations of all sizes to meet a wide range of compliance mandates, noted Mustafa.
As more data privacy regulations such as the California Consumer Privacy Act of 2018 (CCPA) go into effect, just about every organization will need to find a more efficient approach to governing data, said Mustafa. Rather than trying to leverage a large language model (LLM) to achieve that goal, CHOROLOGY.ai opted to build a domain-specific language model for governing data that it then extends using multiple engines for discovery, classification and mapping, he explained.
There is little doubt that generative AI will eventually transform how data is governed and secured, but exactly how that will be accomplished isn’t entirely clear. CHOROLOGY.ai is betting that given the sensitivity of the data being governed organizations will prefer to rely on a domain-specific language model specifically trained to manage data.
Regardless of approach, it’s clear the amount of data being created every day exceeds the ability of most organizations to effectively manage it. The only way to cost-effectively govern and secure data will be to rely more on various forms of AI. Unfortunately, organizations should also assume that cybercriminals will also use AI in the near future to discover where their most sensitive data can be most easily found. The only way to effectively thwart those efforts will be to apply data governance controls as data in near real-time as data is being created.
The challenge is finding the funding needed to acquire the various AI technologies required to achieve that goal. It might be several years before all the tools and platforms used by an organization to secure data are infused with AI capabilities. Many organizations, however, might be able to cost-justify those upgrades by rationalizing existing tools and platforms, or by spending less on platforms that primarily secure network perimeters — that as applications continue to evolve are increasingly dissolving.
No matter how data security evolves there will never be enough expertise available to manage it without the aid of AI. All that remains to be resolved now is how to effectively apply it.

Exciting news! 🎉
Organizations are awash in uncontrolled and unmanaged data. Data is being collected from every device and applications are generating data. There are data feeds from partners and external sources, as well as data being provided by customers. The sheer number of data breaches highlight the risks to the organization of not knowing what data they have, where the data lives, and who has access to that data.
Chorology.ai has launched from stealth with a platform that provides a data security risk and compliance posture management framework to help organizations manage data on-premises and in the cloud. The platform offers a detailed understanding of data sprawl without the processing overhead, the company said. Chorology says it covers all data types and all data compliance mandates, making it easier for organizations to keep up with data governance.
Chorology touted artificial intelligence (AI) features in the platform to handle data discovery, data classification, and data mapping.
“The platform protects and future-proofs sensitive data from rising internal and external threats and expanding regulatory compliance mandates while dramatically lowering the [total cost of data] of managing enterprise data,” the company said.
The founding team has years of industry experience at Symantec, McAfee, Trend Micro, Cisco, and Array Networks, to name a few. Tarique Mustafa, founder and CEO/CTO, was previously the founder of GhangorCloud, a fourth-generation data leak protection platform provider. Mustafa holds multiple “blocking” patents in deep AI, according to the company release.

New Chorology Platform Delivers Patented Intelligent Automation and Enforcement of Consumer Data Privacy Mandates at Lowest Cost of Data Ownership
In recent years, Consumer Data Privacy and Protection has become one of the most significant security issues. The misuse of consumer data by eCommerce merchants and service providers in activities other than for use in the maintenance of customer information, has historically caused much concern amongst the general consumers of these services. Furthermore, the unauthorized disclosure, sale and sharing of the consumer information without their consent result in a major privacy exposure for the consumers, and has been a topic of increasing concern. Over the recent years, therefore, many regulations and compliance mandates have been sanctioned against such practices by the government and regulating authorities in many parts of the world.
Businesses are required to comply with these government regulations and mandates such as GDPR (General Data Privacy Regulation Act) in the European Union. In the United States similar mandates have been created. For example, CCPA (California Consumer Privacy Act) has been mandated in the state of California while several other states in the US are also formulating similar compliance acts. These Privacy laws are set up to protect personal information, financial information, consumer behavioral information and other such data from any wrongful perusal or for business/financial gains without the prior consent of the consumer.
Since the inception of the various Consumer Data Privacy Compliance Acts, the lack of intelligently automated solutions for the enforcement of mandates has caused the compliance chasm to widen.
